Lord Ahriman is the co-founder, guitarist, and principal songwriter of the legendary Swedish black metal band Dark Funeral - one of the most established and internationally recognized forces in extreme metal since 1993.

LORD AHRIMAN — BIOGRAPHY

Known to the world as Lord Ahriman, he is best known as the co-founder, principal songwriter, and guitarist of Dark Funeral. Since the band's formation in 1993, he has played a central role in shaping its music and identity throughout more than three decades of evolution.

Born on November 13, 1972, in Luleå in northern Sweden, Lord Ahriman grew up surrounded by music. His parents regularly took him to concerts, giving him an early fascination with the power, atmosphere, and energy of live music.

Throughout his childhood, he explored and played various instruments. Among them was the violin, where he was considered a promising young player. It wasn't until his late teens, however, that he picked up the guitar — the instrument that would ultimately become his primary means of musical expression. After meeting vocalist Mika and later guitarist Hasse in Luleå, they began making music together, eventually forming Satan's Disciples (1989–1992) — his first band and the beginning of his path as a songwriter and guitarist.

In May 1991, at the age of 18, he left his hometown of Luleå and moved nearly 900 km south to Stockholm. Having travelled there for concerts since the age of 15, he already knew that the underground scene was far more active and saw Stockholm as the place where he could take his musical ambitions further. At the time, Swedish death metal dominated the local extreme metal scene, but Ahriman was already looking in a different direction — with the intention of forming something darker and building a black metal band of his own.

After settling into life in Stockholm, he began searching for the right musicians, and nearly two years later, the foundations of Dark Funeral began to take shape. During its earliest development, the band briefly operated under the name Ahriman — derived from his own moniker, Lord Ahriman — with an early line-up featuring Niko Kaukinen on drums.

As the band evolved, Lord Ahriman and co-founder Blackmoon (RIP) settled on the name Dark Funeral, and further line-up changes followed. By early 1993, the band's first official line-up was complete: Lord Ahriman, Blackmoon, Themgoroth, and Draugen — the line-up that would lead Dark Funeral into its first official chapter.

The name Ahriman originates from Zoroastrian mythology and its representation of darkness and opposition — concepts that had resonated with him from an early age. Over time, these ideas became part of a broader personal outlook centered on individuality, self-determination, balance, and the freedom to walk one's own path. For Lord Ahriman, darkness is not something to fear or suppress, but something to understand and embrace. To embrace your inner darkness is to accept your true nature, draw strength from within, and use that strength to pursue your own path and create something meaningful on your own terms.

This idea of finding balance, knowing yourself, and following your own path has stayed with him throughout his creative journey. Rather than suppressing the darker parts of himself, he draws from them when creating — turning that darkness into music, art, and new ideas.

That independence was present from the beginning of Dark Funeral. During its formative period, the band was deliberately kept largely out of public view, with even many people around them knowing little about what was being created. Rather than following the traditional demo route, they decided that their first public statement would be a fully self-financed and self-released four-track EP.

With no label behind them, Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon saved money from their day jobs and financed the entire project themselves. In January 1994, they entered Dan Swanö's Uni-Sound Studio to record Dark Funeral's four-track debut. Once the recording was finished, they continued saving until they could afford to press the first 1,000 copies and release it through their own label, Hellspawn Records.

May 4, 1994, became a defining day in Dark Funeral's early history. The self-titled Dark Funeral EP was released, and that same day the band drove to Oslo, Norway, to step onto a stage for the very first time at Black Metal Night at Luse Lottes Pub. After keeping the band largely in the shadows while building it from the ground up, Dark Funeral had made both their recorded and live debut on the very same day.

Within approximately one week, the entire first pressing had sold out, carrying the name Dark Funeral beyond its immediate circle and into the international black metal underground.

Dark Funeral's debut album, The Secrets of the Black Arts, followed in 1996 and further defined the musical identity that had begun taking shape on the band's self-titled EP. During these formative years, Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon were both deeply involved in the songwriting, developing the combination of speed, darkness, atmosphere, and melodic guitar work that became central to Dark Funeral's early sound.

Following the line-up changes after the debut album, Lord Ahriman remained as the sole member from the original line-up. With that transition, he naturally took on a greater responsibility for the band's songwriting and musical direction, carrying the foundations of the early material forward while continuing to develop his own approach to melody, harmony, atmosphere, and layered guitars.

That melodic language has remained central to Lord Ahriman's songwriting ever since. His approach to composing is instinctive and driven by atmosphere and emotion — every note must have a purpose within the music he creates. Much of his inspiration comes from within, drawing on emotions, experiences, personal demons, and his own inner darkness. When writing, he often sees cinematic images and landscapes in his mind and allows them to guide the music as it develops.

Drawing inspiration from classical music, Lord Ahriman uses the guitar as his primary tool, weaving together melodies, harmonies, and layers to transform those inner visions and emotions into dark, epic musical landscapes through Dark Funeral's extreme metal expression. This layered approach has been present since the band's earliest recordings — the atmosphere created by the guitars on The Secrets of the Black Arts was so rich that some listeners believed keyboards had been used, yet the textures were created entirely through guitars.

Over the years, this approach has continued to evolve into a distinct and recognizable musical expression closely associated with Lord Ahriman's songwriting and the sound of Dark Funeral. His aim has never been to follow trends, predetermined formulas, or simply repeat what has already been done, but to keep moving the music forward without losing the darkness, melody, and identity at its core.

With Lord Ahriman taking on a greater role in the songwriting and musical direction, Dark Funeral entered a new era with Vobiscum Satanas (1998). The years that followed saw the band continue to develop its sound and expand internationally through releases including Teach Children to Worship Satan (2000) and Diabolis Interium (2001), the latter receiving a nomination for Best Metal Album at the Swedish P3 Guld Awards.

Alongside Dark Funeral, Lord Ahriman also expanded his creative work through Wolfen Society, releasing the Conquer Divine EP in 2001. Over the years, he has also made selected guest appearances and collaborations with artists including The Electric Hellfire Club, Thookian Vortex, and Wolfpack 44.

Dark Funeral's international reach continued to grow throughout the 2000s. The live album De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine (2004) was followed by Attera Totus Sanctus (2005), the Attera Orbis Terrarum DVD series (2007–2008), and Angelus Exuro pro Eternus (2009), documenting a band increasingly built for stages around the world.

Throughout these years, Lord Ahriman's ambitions for Dark Funeral continued to extend far beyond Sweden and the established European metal circuit. Touring became an important part of that vision — taking the band's music directly to audiences and underground scenes around the world, including territories that relatively few extreme metal bands were reaching at the time.

What began with the band's first show in Oslo in 1994 gradually developed into decades of international touring. Along the way, Dark Funeral grew from the underground clubs of their early years to headline tours, major international festivals, and large-scale touring productions. The band has now performed in more than 55 countries worldwide, while continuing to reach new audiences and territories.

A new chapter began with Where Shadows Forever Reign (2016), preceded by the single Nail Them to the Cross (2015). The album marked another important chapter in Dark Funeral's evolution and went on to receive Rock/Metal of the Year at P3 Guld in 2017, while As One We Shall Conquer received the Metal Hammer Award for Metal Anthem.

In 2018, Lord Ahriman's contribution to Swedish music and songwriting was further recognized when he received the SKAP Metal Award.

The official motivation declared:

“He sits alone upon the throne of the dark metal kingdom. He creates furious music with atmospheres and tonalities that send shivers down the spine, and which are loved by fans all over the world.”

Dark Funeral's seventh studio album, We Are The Apocalypse, was released on March 18, 2022, opening another chapter in the band's continuing evolution. The album achieved strong international chart positions and marked Dark Funeral's strongest entry on the U.S. Billboard charts to date — another milestone almost three decades into their career.

Following the release of We Are The Apocalypse, Dark Funeral entered another extensive period of international touring, reaching audiences around the world through headline tours, major international festivals, and large-scale touring productions.

In 2024, Dark Funeral marked the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut EP with a special anniversary edition. With no official release then available that preserved the original EP in its original form — including its artwork and logo — Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon had begun discussing and working together on bringing it back as an official release through Century Media Records.

Following Blackmoon's passing, it became important to Lord Ahriman to carry that project forward and fulfill something they had both wanted to see realized. The 30th Anniversary Edition brought the original 1994 EP back in its original form while also including newly recorded versions of all four songs by Dark Funeral's current line-up — connecting the band's beginnings with its present while honoring the history that Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon had created together.

In 2026, Dark Funeral released A Beast To Praise (Live In Stockholm), their second live album, recorded at Fållan in Stockholm on April 16, 2022. The concert marked the band's return to the stage following the pandemic and served as the release show for We Are The Apocalypse. Recorded in the city where Dark Funeral had first taken shape almost three decades earlier, the performance captured another defining moment in the band's continuing journey.

The album was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the international metal press, with several publications awarding it near-perfect or perfect scores — a reception that exceeded expectations and further underlined the strength of Dark Funeral as a live band.

Beyond music, Lord Ahriman has continued to explore his visual and creative ideas through the Lord Ahriman Signature Collection. Developed as an extension of his artistic world, the collection brings together symbolism, craftsmanship, art, and design while reflecting the same philosophy that has followed him throughout his life and music: embrace your inner darkness, draw strength from within, and use it to create and forge your own path.

More than three decades after the formation of Dark Funeral, Lord Ahriman continues to write, record, and tour internationally. Together with his friends and bandmates, he continues to push Dark Funeral forward — exploring new musical territory while carrying the darkness, melodic identity, and uncompromising spirit that have remained at the heart of the band throughout its journey.

With Dark Funeral's eighth studio album now taking shape, another chapter is already beginning.
